| Monday, 26 January 2009 09:25 |
![]() Saturday residents of Javea were woken to winds of up to 100kmh. Those who ventured out were taking risks as debris sailed through the air. Branches were ripped from trees, taking power lines and blocking access to homes. Some residents were lucky to escape without harm as trees crashed around their homes. The Arenal beach was hit hard as it is open to the elements. Roofs were ripped off shops, glass walls blown in, signs and toldos ripped from walls and even lamp posts came crashing down. The sea itself was not as wild as many had expected as the winds were mainly offshore. Local police were stretched as they tried to secure areas and roads. Iberdrola were busy reconnecting homes which had lost power due to fallen debris and trees. By Sunday morning the wind had abated and people ventured out to survey the damage, amazed that there had been no major injury caused.
