Was there an earthquake in Javea today? Indeed there was! Several people have reported to us feeling several episodes of shaking during the night and the strange occurrence was also reported on Coast FM news. This follows Javea News hearing about another example of this happening last week, although we failed to confirm the story.
Today’s quake however measured 2.2 on the Richter scale as you can see here . The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre report on their website, an earthquake measuring 2.2 occurring at 04.33 GMT or 05.33 local time and located 7km East of Benitachell. Javea News sources, living in Costa Nova and Tosalet report feeling 4 or 5 seconds of quite strong shaking, followed by several smaller tremors.
Apparently there is a fault line running between here and the Balearic Islands under the sea. Several years ago there was quite a big quake out at sea that resulted in a huge crack appearing in the ocean floor. So much water flooded into this crack that sea level dropped by up to 2m leaving boats in Javea port hanging from their moorings.
