Expats Report Break In Attempts

Wednesday, 26 March 2008

RESIDENTS in Jávea and surrounding areas were warned to be aware following reports to the Guardia Civil and local police regarding attempted robberies and burglaries.

Costa Blanca News was contacted by an English resident after she and her family were confronted by intruders in the Toscal area on Thursday, March 13.

“I had just sat down when my daughter started crying, and wanted her Nana who lives next door.I crossed the room to make a phone call, holding my daughter and then saw two women on the terrace by my pool walking away. They must have seen me and decided to leave.

“My first instinct was to ask them what they were doing on my property so I shouted at them.

“They first claimed that they didn't think I was in and wanted cleaning work. Then they approached me and tried to gain access again by pushing me towards the door, saying they wanted clothes for their 21-month-old child.

“The two women quickly realised they weren't going to succeed and upon seeing my mother-in-law, sped away in a silver rental car.”
“It wasn't until I went back inside that I realised that they had opened a window, but I immediately reported the incident the police and Guardia Civil.”

The mother described the two women as having dark skin and long hair, short and fat and of a general scruffy appearance. Very shortly after reporting the incident and identifying them, the two women were detained.

The British resident continued explaining: “This is not the first time this has happened recently. There have been four other reports from other areas including Tosalet and Rafaelet but many more crimes are taking place and the police and Guardia are urging people to call 112 where there are English-speaking staff available to help non-Spanish speakers.

Police believe that expat residents are being targeted as they are easy prey, especially those with small children.

Supermarkets and other stores where people are loading cars or wandering down aisles are also being targeted.

A local locksmith in Jávea, who is part of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme explained that they don't want to scare people, but residents need to be more aware of incidents that have taken place.

He also praised the work that the Guardia Civil and local police have done following the reports on the incidents. He commented: “We have to work together to stop and solve these crimes. Whether you see a suspicious car or person take note of licence plate numbers and contact the police. Crime has increased so we need to help each other.”

The general guideline for people when out is to keep their eye on their bags, don't leave valuables in the car and lock the front door if you're sitting outside for extra security.

The two women caught are due to go to court at the end of the month for breaking and entry.
