San Juan Fiesta - All You Need To Know

Once again it is June and we are heading into our patronal fiestas of San Juan - John the Baptist. This consists of just over 2 weeks of activities and events culminating on the 24th with the burning of the falla. The programme began on 7th with the presetation of the the queens their attendants and the quintos (18 year olds) for the year. 12th to the 14th is the international fair in Via Augusta. the rest of the events take place in and around the old town(Pueblo) and are a major part of the Javea calendar. Speaking from experience there is a lot of time and organisation that goes into these event (they begin planning in June of the year before!!)so please try and support them. Below is a list of events and activities from  14th till 24th.
 
Saturday 14th.
7.00pm Parade of queens and quintos through the town from Plaza de Constitution(new car park in the centre of the town) to Portal de Clot (new car park near mercadona)
9.30pm The queens and commission for the fiestas will be publically acknowledged by the mayor and town hall at the new Portal de Clot plaza.
11.45pm Music and fire show in the Plaza de Constitution.
1.00am Music concert and dancing to the band Vertigo in the Plaza de Constitucion.

Sunday 15th

9.30am Open table tennis competition at the sports centre in the port.
10.00am Custom motor bike rally on avenida agusta in front of the "instituto 1" school. then the rally will tour various areas of the town.
11.00am Bull running with small bulls, in the market place car park for under 16's
12.30pm Entry of small bulls and continuation of bull running for under 16s.
1.00pm Bastoners de Cardedeu perform traditional dances through the streets
7.00pm Senior bull running- market place car park- no under 16s, alchohol or inebriated persons in the arena.
10.00pm Musical and poetry recital in the althletics grounds near Graull school.
11.30pm Continuation of bull running, culminating in the "toro embolat" bull with fire on its horns. followed by mobile disco in the carpark(about 1am!)

Monday 16th

7.00pm Bull running
11.30pm Bull running

Tuesday 17th

7.00pm Bull running in market car park
10.30pm Rock band "Nokturn" in the Plaza de Constitucion
11.30pm Continuation of bull running with "toro embolat" followed by mobile disco show.

Wednesday 18th

12.30pm Bull running for under 16s
7.00pm Senior bull running
10.00pm Valencian theatre show in the ground of the athletics track near Graull school
11.30pm Entrance of bulls with all 15 animals; bull running with "toro embolat" and followed by mobile disco show.

Thursday 19th

12.30pm Junior bull running for under 16's with 2 and 3 year old bulls
7.00pm Senior bull running
10.00pm Serenading of the fiesta queens and the president by the Tuna de Xabia
12.00am Concert in Plaza de Constitution by musical group "Formula V" followed by mobile disco show.

Friday 20th "The Day of the Building"

8.00am Wake up fireworks in the town for all the "penyas" to breakfast together
9.45am Building of the infantil and main falla in the Plaza de Constitucion
10.00am Tournament champion of Raspall(peloto) between the different penyas in Calle San Domingo
10.30am Games and activities for children in the althletics ground near Graull school.
12.00pm "Pasa calle" the "festeros"( in traditional costume) parade through the decorated streets in the town
1.00pm Giant paella for all in Montaner park - the park area behind Plaza de Constitucion
5.00pm Games and races for children in the Plaza de constitucion
7.00pm "Pasa Calles" parade of festeros throught the streets starting at Portal de clot
10.00pm Theartre perfomance in valenciana by Montgo theatre group in althletics ground
12.00am Music concert in Plaza de Constitucion by "Chenoa" followed by mobile disco show till the early hours.

Saturday 21st "Day of the Quintos

8.00am Wake up call for all the quintos
12.00pm Procession of all qunitos groups from Portal de Clot to the Plaza de Constitucion, followed by a karaoke and a prize for the most musical quinto!!
7.00pm Mobile disco show with foam and water
9.30pm Sardine and beer dinner for all
11.00pm Dancing to"Mundo" orchestra in plaza de constitucion
12.30am Music by the fun band "La madre que los pario", follwed by more dancing to orchestra Mundo and mobile disco show.

Sunday 22nd

8.00am Wake up call
10.30am Snack for all children in the Plaza de Constitucion. Display of masks from around the world.
7.00pm The offering of flowers to Jesus de Nazareno. The procession begins at the athletics track near Graull school, along the Ronda Sur, then Ronda Norte, Calvario and on to the the Ermita on the hill behind the Instituo Antonio Lido.
9.30pm Penyas have a picnic supper in Frechinal area accompanied by band music.
10.00pm Traditional street dances by dance group of Portichol .
11.00pm Street theatre by the Puja group followed by the play Kaosmos in the Plaza de Constitucion. followed by mobile disco show.

Monday 23rd

8.00am Wake up call
10.00am offering of flowers to St John during Pasacalle
10.00am Sack races and pinatas, with free drinks and bocodillos for children in the park area of Frechinal(near footbal club)
1.00pm The committe of fiestas takes paella to the Cholbi old peoples home.
7.00pm Parade of penyas accompanied by group Iknotiz, followed by presentation of prizes for varios penya catogories.
9.00pm mobile disco show with foam and water in the area of Frechinal
12.00am Traditional burning of San Juan Focs, where festeros burn their olive crowms and jump through the flames for luck! This is followed by the burning of of old junk "Hoguera de trastos viejos" all at Calle Arrabal de Baix,near the petrol station on the roundabout!!
2.00am "corre focs" spectacular by La Xara theatre group.Tthis is a moving street perfomance using fireworks and music, which satrts in Calle Arrabal de baix , travels along Ronda Sur, Ronda Norte, Calvario, Ave Angel Domenech and into the Plaza de Constitucion. It is followed by mobile disco show.

Tuesday 24th "Dia de San Juan"

8.00am Wake up call for the penyas!!!!(needed after the night before!!)
10.00am Pasa calle when the the quintas and fiesta commission are collected from their homes and escorted around the streets to the church. In Plaza de Xativa in the Frechinal area there will be an open air mass followed by hot chocolatre and cakes
12.00pm Mass at San Bartolome Church.
2.00pm "Masceleta" in the Thursday market car park. continuous fireworks which creschendoing into a loud bang.
2.00pm Giant paella for all in the area of Frechinal.
2.30pm Offering of wine to the queens of the fiesta at Portal de Clot.
7.00pm Float parade starting near the Panda chinese restaurant by the traffic lights to Ave Juan Carlos, along Ave Juan Carlos to the town,along Ronda Sur(traveling in the wrong direction for traffic!!) and ending at the Avd de Valencia. Then the festeros walk through the streets to the Plaza de Constitucion
10.00pm Burning of the infant falla( effigy) in the Plaza de Constitucion.
11.30pm Dancing to the band Montecarlo in the Plaza de Constitucion.
12.00am Musical firework dispaly in the Plaza de Constitucion, followed by the burning of the main Falla in the Plaza. Then more dancing to the band Montecarlo till the early hours!!
