Denia Rugby - 2nd in Tavernes Beach sevens

ImageOn Saturday Denia Rugby Club travelled north to Tavernes for their second Beach Rugby Sevens Tournament of the Summer. After a good fourth place finish in Gandia, Denia with several changes to the squad, were keen to improve. Six teams entered the Tournament which was played on a League basis with each side guaranteed five matches. Denia's first game was against Las Rozas from Madrid and this turned out to be the toughest encounter of the day. One try each at half time saw Denia's mix of youth and experience well placed but the small pitch did not suit Denia's younger athletic players and the bigger Madrid side dominated territory in the second half to record a 3-1 victory. Denia's try being scored by Juan.

The second game was a complete contrast as Denia overcame Veteranos 6-1 (Juan 2,Yovanny 2,David & Shaun), but this match allowed Denia to field several new players. Host side Tavernes were next up. Tavernes had beaten Denia at the regular 15-a-side version of the game on the last five occasions that the sides had met, so Denia were keen to break the trend. A ferocious match saw the lead change hands several times but despite Tavernes fielding virtually a full strength forward dominated side throughout the match, Denia held on for a 3-2 victory (Juan,Yovanny & Mariano). Getafe from Madrid had held Las Rozas to a 0-0 draw and Denia had to summon up every ounce of energy to record another tight victory 2-1 (Dale & Santiago).

The match boiled over at times and the albeit needless intervention of the local beach Policeman after a "minor confrontation" was a first ! Denia's final game saw 2nd place guaranteed with a comfortable 3-0 (David,Jack & Yovanny) defeat of Juveniles.

The final match between Tavernes and unbeaten Las Rozas meant that any of three sides could win the Tournament. A single try victory for Tavernes would have given the Trophy to Denia. A highly charged match saw staunch Valenciano speaking Tavernes confront the "old enemy" from Madrid. Despite the build up and some interesting politically motivated bi-lingual exchanges it was a no contest as the skill and composure of the Madrilenos was too much for the hot headed brute force of the Valencianos. A 5-0 victory gave Las Rozas the Trophy and the only try they conceded during the day was scored by 16 year old Juan Acuna from Denia.

Denia were very pleased with their second place and look forward to the Alicante Sevens on the San Juan Beach next weekend. To summarise, a very good day out was had by all players and supporters, a well organized Tournament and with "proper" referees ! Many thanks to all concerned. Denia RC: Dale,Shaun M,Charlie,Moncho,David,Scotty,Shaun O,Daniel, Mariano,Juan,Jack,Yovanny,Giuliano,Santiago,Brendan,Nathan & Eddie (well almost !).
