Denia Rugby Club host busy day !

Sunday, 03 February 2008

On Saturday it was rugby, rugby, rugby and more rugby in Denia. The day started with a convincing 41-7 victory for the Infantiles (Under 15s) against CAU Valencia and was swiftly followed by another outstanding performance by the table topping Cadetes (Under 17s), who beat Elche 69-0. Both Denia sides dominated from start to finish but equally showed great maturity in keeping to game plans when in the past such apparantly one-sided games would deteriorate with individual rather than team efforts.

The Seniors, in front of a large crowd many of whom had enjoyed a pre-match paella, then produced another frustrating performance going down 7-17 to local rivals La Safor from Gandia. In all levels of rugby, there are key players in key positions and if these individuals do not perform the team will always struggle. This, combined with a ridiculous amount of needless penalties given away, allowed La Safor to dominate both territory and possession.

Time and again Denia would gain ground, infringe, the La Safor fly-half would boot the ball 50 metres down the park, and the La Safor catch and drive would gain additional territory. The fact that the visitors only scored two tries is a reflection on the valiant defence of the home side. In fact Denia's only try came from a turnover near to their own line, Sam kicking deep into the La Safor half, with Kenny collecting the loose ball and feeding Yovanny to score under the posts, Eddie adding the conversion. 7-0 to Denia after 10 minutes of play. La Safor responded quickly pushing deep into the Denia 22. Denia had the opportunity to clear but the kick was charged down and from the resulting confusion La Safor scored. Just before half time they added a second try when again Denia had the opportunity to kick clear but took the ball into contact and were turned over. 7-14 at half time.

The second half was very nervous and tempers frayed, with the referee, who had a great game, sin-binning two La Safor players but still Denia could not put together the forward platform needed to create space for their dangerous backs. A late penalty secured a deserved victory for the visitors. Afterwards both sides went to the Hostel Oasis to watch England make a total hash of things against Wales, but the food and beer went a little way to make up for the days disappointments.
