11:19 2014

Due to new government cuts those who have retired early and moved to Spain will no longer receive subsidised healthcare from the UK.

The latest legislation will not affect retirees over the age of 65 (60 years for women) but will affect those under 65 who are not employed in Spain.

The current scheme allows non-retired expats 30 months cover, providing they have made National Insurance contributions in the UK during the last three years. Needless to say this has been a valuable resource for British citizens are not old enough to be categorised as a state pensioner and who are not employed. If you are currently covered by the scheme, you will continue to receive subsidised care until your 30 months are up.

You And The European Health Insurance Card

Those of retirement age will not be affected, and if you hold a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) you will continue to be covered for emergency care.

The Spanish Health Authority in Valencia has elected to provide healthcare in the healthcare system for Britons with a monthly cost of approximately €60.

If this new legislation affects you, you are advised to look into purchasing private health insurance. The changes will take place from 1st April 2014.
