Javea’s seven-year battle to reverse the Catastrazo that rocked the town is finally over – but may be a hollow victory for residents and local authorities alike.

A land-value review in 2005 led to the property registry values of nearly every home and commercial building in Jávea multiplying, and their IBI tax payments with it.

Homeowners have been forced to pay out astronomical sums in rates on their properties, and were hoping for a favourable verdict once the case went to trial.

But even though the Supreme Court has declared the catastral revision of 2005 to be null and void, there is no guarantee as yet that the overpaid rates will be refunded.

The land registry office has announced that the next IBI bill will be calculated on catastral figures for the last valid review, in 1995, with the requisite 10 per cent imposed by the central government this year added (as reported by the CNB).
