Javea To Share Desalinated Water

Javea To Share Desalinated Water

The Javea desalination plant has the capacity to produce 28,000 m3 of desalinated water per day; a figure that is expected to rise to 42,000 m3 per day in the coming years. This is sufficient water for around 150,000 people. The plant is unique in the sense it is the only plant in the world that uses a process known as reverse osmosis to dilute the extracted brine. This makes it environmentally friendlier than other desalination plants.

If we have a year with low rainfall, those of us who live in Javea have no need to worry about having enough water thanks to the plant, but other municipalities in the region are not so lucky. For this reason, the mayor of Jávea, José Chulvi, recently met with the CEO of the plant and the mayors of Benitachell, Teulada, Calpe and Benissa. Although Benitachell and Teulada have has access to the Javea plant water at certain dates, a solution needs to be reached to also supply Calpe and Benissa.

The talks were said to be very positive; the plant produces plenty of water for all the municipalities, so it is a question of creating a system or infrastructure to transport it to home owners should the need arrive.
