The King of Spain, Juan Carlos has abdicated after spending nearly 40 years on the throne, the Prime Minister has said this morning.

Crown Prince Felipe, 46, will now succeed to the throne.

No reason has formally been given over the King’s abdication, though he is expected to issue a statement later today to express personal reasons for his decision.

King Juan Carlos I has been held in high regard in Spain since the approval of the Spanish Constitution of 1978, and the country’s transition to democracy.
