Spanish Air Traffic Controllers Strike

Spanish Air Traffic Controllers Strike
August 08
10:49 2010

As if dealing with the August heat is not enough we now have to contend with the possibility of strike action by the air traffic controllers in Spain! We were just starting to think we had got through the summer unscathed by the Ash cloud or French air traffic controllers!!!!

The Spanish controllers voted on Tuesday 3rd August to carry out industrial action in the month of August. However they are still in  negotiations and have not declared a definite day for disruption.

They have suggested that the action may take place on the 18th or 20th, one of the busiest weeks!! However they  are obliged by law to give at least 10 days notice!

Talks continued Thursday with  passengers left in suspense as to when the strike will occur. The union leaders are refusing to announce the date of the strike, as a negotiating strategy. On Wednesday representatives of the company had reached agreement on several of its claims, but talks have  continued and as of going to press no definite agreement has been met.  They have agreed on several requests from the USCA regarding salary increases and comparable working conditions with their European counterparts. AENA has also offered an average salary of €200,000 to inspectors until 2013, provided that work is carried out “in full normality” and without absenteeism. Before the government made changes in February, the salary was thought to be €350,000. AENA have also accepted a request to adjust working hours.

Since the end of July there has been a great amount of absenteeism which the negotiators feel is more like an unofficial strike.  The government have specially  trained military personnel available to cover in case of  strike action orwide scale absenteeism  which has been happening since February !

The tourist industry said yesterday that even the mere threat of strike means losses due to losing late bookings, people canceling flights and hotel bookings as they do not want to loose their precious and often hard earned holiday.
